ATTENTION: Your Deodorant Is Harming You

There’s something to be said for natural products all across the board. Natural products are something of a craze in a more environmentally friendly world as more of us are turning away from man-made substances in favor of products that are a bit easier to recognize or come across in nature. By switching to a non-toxic deodorant, you’re making a much bigger (and better) impact on your body than you may have thought.

More and more people may want to consider natural deodorants. There are a number of things that classify deodorants as natural. The best natural deodorants are not aluminum-based as a number of regular deodorants are citing an apparent difference between using regular deodorants and an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s and a few varieties of cancer among other health issues. Additionally, the ingredients in natural deodorants are often plant-based and free of all harmful toxins.

Unlike standard deodorants, natural deodorants will also naturally keep your pores open. Whereas standard antiperspirants can present problems on your especially sensitive underarm skin, natural deodorants actually let the skin breathe. This is especially important in letting those pleasant smells stick around for longer.

Time for a quick science lesson! Sweat on your body doesn’t cause odor on its own, but when it mixes with the natural bacteria in your skin, that’s when it has the potential to get that distinct and often unpleasant smell. Antiperspirants and standard deodorants clog the pores to prevent you from sweating, therefore eliminating the smell at the cost of your pores. Natural deodorants work in reverse. By treating the bacteria rather than blocking your pores and your natural sweat, you’ll have reduced or completely eliminated body odor.

Standard antiperspirants and deodorants may actually be making your odor problem WORSE in the end. Since the pores end up clogged when using standard products, the sweat builds up under the skin, which causes a buildup of good bacteria that feed on your sweat and serves as a breeding ground for bad bacteria as well, which can make your sweat smell even worse. In short, science even says please switch over to our deodorant for the sake of health, smell, and general happiness.

Now, let’s talk about the biggest reason to switch: CANCER RISK IS HIGH.

Studies show that breast cancer most often develops in the upper outer quarter of a breast, which is the area closest to the armpit – where deodorant is normally applied. This has led some people to wonder if there is a connection between breast cancer and the use of deodorant products.

It’s important to understand that breast tissue isn’t spread equally over the four quadrants that make up a breast; of the four, the upper outer quadrant has the most breast tissue. When you consider the amount of breast tissue in this area, the proportion of cancers that develop there makes sense. Nevertheless, some researchers suggest that an increase in the use of antiperspirants correlates to a rise in the incidence of breast cancer.

The active ingredient in most antiperspirants is aluminum, which blocks the sweat glands in order to inhibit perspiration. Additionally, some antiperspirants – and deodorants – contain parabens which are used widely as preservatives in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, and even as food additives, primarily for their bactericidal and fungicidal properties. Both aluminum and parabens are potential endocrine disruptors, which means they have potential to mimic estrogen and interfere with the body’s hormone levels at least in laboratory (non-human) studies. (1)
