What is CLA?

 

CLA stands for “Conjugated Linoleic Acid”. It is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that is part of the omega 6 family of fatty acids. While omega 6 fatty acids are known to be inflammatory in high concentrations, proper intake and supplementation of CLA, combined with an active lifestyle can have a range of health benefits.

 

Most notable of its health benefits is the effect it has on fat loss. It is hypothesized that CLA helps reduce body fat through its beneficial effects on energy metabolism, adipogenesis, inflammation, lipid metabolism, and apoptosis. Some studies have shown that CLA acts on the enzymes involved in new fatty acid synthesis, desaturation of fatty acids and triglyceride synthesis. It even helps reduce fat storage by acting on the receptors responsible for fat cell production. In addition, some animal studies have shown that CLA supplementation can lead to increased energy expenditure, increased fat oxidation and an increase in brown fat (fat that burns energy instead of stores it).

 

In human studies, CLA has been shown to decrease body fat and increase lean body mass in healthy groups supplementing with CLA versus placebo. It is also hypothesized to help control blood sugar levels and food cravings. As part of your healthy lifestyle, CLA supplementation can help supercharge your fat loss goals and maintain your overall health.

 

CLA can naturally be found in beef and dairy products, particularly in grass-fed butter and beef. However, the amount of CLA ranges from 0.34-1.07% of the total fat found in dairy products and 0.12-0.68% in beef. At most, you may get approximately 100 milligrams of CLA per serving of beef or dairy. The dosage used in human studies to assess the effect of CLA-assisted fat loss ranges from 1000 – 3400 milligrams of CLA. Therefore, supplementation of CLA is necessary in order to achieve a dose that is effective for fat loss.

 

It should also be noted that more is not better when it comes to CLA. Since CLA is an omega 6 fatty acid, too much of it could contribute to fatty liver disease, increase insulin resistance, and promote inflammation. A supplemental dose of 1-3 grams daily, taken before or during a meal is considered safe and can lead to the health benefits mentioned above.
